Haunting Hammered Dulcimer Music
Celtic Americana
Saturday, January 31st, 7:30 PM – Free
Although, traditional Celtic and American Roots music is her first love, there are many great songs from other genres you might hear her sing. Her voice sounds
like one you trust, and her music is timeless.
“Rose is a singer who has a profound country style in which the traditional Irish roots takes a predominant presence. Her voice is strong and lush, distant from the ethereal tones of Irish singers and much closer to the warm American land. The Blues and old styles are familiar to her, as she demonstrates her rendition of Gershwin’s “Summertime.” — Interfolk, Spain, November 2008).
Vashon Island Music Events: Red Bicycle Bistro — Scattergun and Deadwood Revival
SCATTERGUN (Southern Rock/Country/Rock) — 1/31/2009 from 09:30 PM – 21+FREE COVER!
Continuing to map the territory claimed by the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, as well as more traditional pioneers such as Bill Monroe, Scattergun puts the hot burn of a whiskey shot back into country rock.
The music of Scattergun gives a nod to the building blocks of country’s namesake and tradition, as well as more modern topics such as low rise jeans, and the need to fight corporate interests to save our small towns, and bi-partisan politics.
Their style definitely lands towards the rock end of country rock, which they have termed “biker country”.
At times serious, other times tongue in cheek, Scattergun makes no apologies for enjoying themselves.

Vashon Island Real Estate: Hot Tips for Sellers in a Down Market
No matter whether the real estate market is going up or down, there are some things you can do to almost guarantee that your home will sell faster, easier and for a little more money than compared to a similar house in the same street.
However there are some big real estate selling mistakes that many home owners overlook that could affect their ability to sell their properties. Let’s look at some of the biggest real estate selling mistakes home owners make.
1. Poor Condition
Selling real estate that is in poor condition will mean an instant reduction in the potential price you could have set for the sale. Trying to market a home that is in poor condition or a home that has obvious maintenance issues that have been ignored is a sure way to put off many potential buyers.
People will automatically assume that if a house has any minor maintenance issues showing, then there must be bigger maintenance issues beneath the surface. Take some time to complete any repairs or maintenance on the home.
2. Real Estate Staging
Selling real estate is about trying to attract potential new buyers into thinking a property is the right place for them to raise a family and build their own memories. Most people who sell their homes overlook the importance of real estate staging prior to a showing. Giving your house a quick wipe over with a cleaning cloth and putting the dishes away is not enough.
Buying a home is an emotional purchase for most people. Buyers want to walk into a home and feel good. They want to imagine how their own furniture will look in each room and how their own decorations will brighten up each room.
Taking some time to freshen up paint with a light, neutral color and then removing all your personal finishing touches, such as your family photos, kid’s toys and some ornaments will make each room in your home look more spacious and more open. If you have big bulky furniture, either re-arrange it so each room appears bigger or borrow smaller furniture from friends and family.
3. Street Appeal
People selling real estate often overlook the importance of street appeal. Many home owners spend a lot of time fixing smaller maintenance issues within the home, but only take a moment to run a lawn mower over the yards.
Potential buyers want to be able to drive up to the front of a house and immediately feel that the home is appealing and attractive. Overgrown trees and shrubs obscure the house from the street. Prune them back or cut them down. Open up the yard with border plantings to make the land plot seem bigger than it really is from the street.
Selling real estate is all about appealing to buyers in such a way that they feel comfortable paying money for your property even when other properties might not be selling. An inexperienced agent may tell you to reduce your price, but the reality is people who sell real estate can actually increase their price if they’re willing to put in some work to appeal to potential buyer’s emotions.

Vashon Island Real Estate: Should You Buy a Home in ’09?
The housing market and general economy is still falling, yet the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has reported that in December 2008 there was a slight increase in activity with potential buyers and sellers tempted into the market, possibly by successive interest rates. There was a rise in both those looking to buy a house and the number of new properties that came on the market. First time buyers, having been priced out of the market for so long, bought 10.8% of the properties sold. In addition, the average number of sales made per agent held steady in December even though this is traditionally a quiet month. Some agents reported a small rise in house prices which the NAEA suggest may indicate that the rate at which prices are falling had slowed in some areas, rather than that the prices had reached a trough. The number of househunters rose from 186 to 200 and the numbers of properties agents had on the books rose from 87 to 100. The number of sales agreed per agent held steady at 6.
However, in comparison, early in January this year the Financial Times had asked the question “Will 2009 be a year to buy property?” and gathered the views of over 50 economists. Over 60% believed that 2009 would not be a good year to buy property, whilst the remaining economists believed that, particularly towards the end of the year, it could be safe to buy a property. There was an interesting mix of views. On the side that believe 2009 will be a year to buy property the reasons given were that buying real assets such as property would be protection against a decline in currency. Interest rates are expected to remain low throughout the year and by the end of 2009, although lending will remain tough, there may be more credit available particularly if the government steps up its intervention. Some economists believe that the market will have bottomed out by the end of 2009 and some buyers will then be enticed back into the market by the combination of low prices and low interest rates.
For those against the idea of buying property in 2009 the key belief is that property prices will remain simply too high in comparison to earnings and credit availability. Some economists expect property prices to continue to fall into 2010 and bottom out during that year – Capital Economics expects prices to fall a further 20%, Global Insight 15% and JPMorgan 10%. However, one economist predicts that the house price falls will continue into 2014. Factors to support the continued falls are ongoing credit restrictions, still stretched affordability, rising unemployment with muted economic growth, and the negative expectations that the market will continue to fall. And of course, with the recession biting potential buyers may delay buying due to fears of their job security.
As a whole there seems no rush to buy property. The country is in recession, 2009 will see huge rises in unemployment, lending is expected to remain constrained and as a result the demand will be low. Of course some people will have to move house due to personal reasons and the desire for home ownership and the personal benefits that owning your own home can bring. Transactions will therefore continue to trickle, but the idea of buying a property as a good investment i.e. the buy-to-let market, is some way off. However, post-recession and in the years following economic recovery we could see another housing boom due to an undersupply of housing, increasingly affordable property and a new, more secure banking system. During 2009 property sold at auctions and those that are in need of repair and renovation will be sold at very low prices and bargains will be easily found. If you buy in 2009, offer low and assume to hold your property for some time.

Vashon Island Events: “Stone Soup – A Discussion about Hard Times and Hope”
Vision for Vashon Island will host “Stone Soup: A Discussion about Hard Times and Hope”from 4-6:30 PM on Sunday, February 1 at the Vashon Presbyterian Church. Guests are invited to bring a contribution for the vegetarian or meat-based (“meat-a-tarian”?) soups. Salad and bread will be provided.
The gathering is intended to provide an opportunity for the community to tell their stories of how the economic downturn has affected them or may affect them in the future. It is hoped that the process of sharing and deep listening will break down the sense of aloneness that permeates personal crisis.
This is the first in a series of community education programs which will include presentations on political advocacy, organizing and fundraising, as well as breakout sessions in food security, transportation, housing, health care, local exchange currency, the “greening” of Vashon Island and community-based funding sources such as revolving loan funds.
Vision for Vashon is a new Vashon Island resource for Island residents to explore means to deal with the economic crisis locally. The organization has distributed information by flyer which identifies sources for food and shelter.

Vashon Island Music Event: Cafe Luna – Lisa Marshall, Mack & Rachel
Friday, January 23rd, 7:30 PM
Lisa Marshall: A Woman of Soulful Rhythm & Blues
Here’s a woman who brings back those earthy sounds of 70s Motown, and more than a touch of soul. Influenced by Areth, Gladys, and Janis, you won’t want to miss her.
Review of SIMPLE
“Lisa Marshall’s first solo album carries a heavy debt to the Motown era; backup singers croon to Marshall’s soaring vocals, while tambourines and bass riffs stroke and jingle each piece to perfection. Like late Tina Turner, the swinging melody dip and soars with lyrics about defeat and triumph and defeat again. It’s the contrast of it all that gets you. Like the groove that underpins lines like “what makes a heart break so slow?” Or Marshall’s surprising compositions; her voice belts and soars through the building lyrics then dips to a restrained contralto for climatctic lines like “I am so, so, so . . . lost” which gets more deliciously guttural with each “so.” Hints of reverb in the production space add a subtle, creepy effect to the gospel tunes. It could almost be too crafted, but with Marshall’s spellbinding voice pulling at the tempo, the album feels so organic that you can’t imagine it any other way.” – Rachel Dovey, Seattle Sound Magazine.
Saturday, January 24th, 7:30 PM
Mack & Rachel – Folk, Country, & Bluegrass
This more than-likable pair might remind you of forty years ago when Gram Parsons got together with a very young Emmylou Harris. These two are consummate musicians who just happen to be wonderfully entertaining.
Mack Bailey and Rachel Levy combine folk, country, and bluegrass for a sound all their own. The duo have been likened to a “similar pairing 40 years ago of Gram Parsons and a very young Emmylou Harris”. Their passionate songs and melodic sound create an intimate atmosphere and make for a special evening of music!
You can tell a lot about singer songwriter Mack Bailey by the musical company he keeps. Mack has been hailed as “the next great singer in folk music” by no less an authority than Glenn Yarbrough, the original tenor in the fabulous world-renowned folk trio, The Limeliters. Mack’s career came full circle when in 2004 he was asked to be the newest tenor in The Limeliters, with whom he now performs around the country.
Mack performs with his wife, Rachel Levy, and the duo have been likened to a “similar pairing 40 years ago of Gram Parsons and a very young Emmylou Harris”. “Lucky Man”, written by Mack and Rachel, was chosen as a finalist in the 2006 mid-atlantic song contest in the country/bluegrass category and was also selected to be profiled in sing out! Magazine. In addition, this past fall “Lucky Man” was a feature song on NASCAR Angels. Mack and Rachel also co-penned “It’s Time”, which has received critical acclaim from former Vice-President Al Gore, as promoting environmental awareness. Mack was awarded for his excellence with a WAMMIE for Best Traditional Folk Performer, and his song “High Gear” has been featured on NPR’s popular Car Talk.

Vashon Island Events: Red Bicycle Bistro – Sideways Reign, Trolls Cottage, Church of the Great Rain
01/23/2009 from 09:30 PM. No cover.
Sideways Reign, based in Union, Washington, is a band representative of the artistic sensibilities of the masses. They’re your local barkeep, the hard-hat wearing construction worker, or the ice cream maker on the corner; on and off stage they remain the approachable, everyday guys you grab a beer with after work. In the same sense, A Stand For All Stages, the band’s debut LP, offers something for the broadest of audiences with a genre defying blend of rock, blues, folk, and reggae.
01/24/2009 at 09:30 PM. $8 cover.
Trolls Cottage packed the house with Subconscious Population last Halloween like no other bands have ever been able to, thanks to the warm welcome by friends and family that came out to support the hometown boys. It may be cold outside, but it’s smokin’ hot in the room with TC throwing down some beats. Trolls Cottage is returning to The Red Bicycle after a few months away for another smokin’ hot show!
The Trolls Cottage sound has been defined in many ways. Some say it is semi-acoustic rock with conscious lyrics and danceable beats. Others see have seen it different light, such as in 2002, when their live album was voted to the semi-finals of the Grammy Awards, in the Best Reggae Album category. More often than not, Trolls Cottage has been described as unique, having developed a sound that makes the group stand out from the oceans of other bands. They are enjoyed by a wide range of people, especially when performing at outdoor festivals where the crowds are so diverse. They have released four full length CD’s with another soon to be. The energy this band brings to a performance is exhilarating and most certainly compels the audience to get up and dance.
01/25/2009 from 07:00 PM. No Cover.
So what the heck is The Church of Great Rain? Well, it’s not exactly a bunch of Lutherans from Minnesota. But it is a group of Vashon Island performers who aspire to be the pacific northwest’s answer to A Prairie Home Companion.
Vashon Island Lunvision: Who Killed the Electric Car?
Lunavision and Peter Ray Present
Thursday, January 22, 7:00pm
Free
Writer/Director Chris Paine’s documentary feature film Who Killed the Electric Car? premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006 before its release by Sony Pictures to critical acclaim in 100 U.S. markets. The film was the third highest-grossing theatrical documentary of 2006 and screened with An Inconvenient Truth in many markets.
Currently in wide DVD release, Paine’s film investigates the events leading to the quiet destruction of thousands of new, radically efficient electric vehicles. Through interviews and narrative, the film paints a picture of an industrial culture whose aversion to change and reliance on oil may be deeper then its ability to embrace ready solutions.
Who Killed the Electric Car? and Chris Paine were nominated by the Writer’s Guild for Best Documentary of 2006. The film also received nominations from The Broadcast Critics Awards and The Environmental Media Awards for Best Documentary of 2006. The film won the audience award at the Canberra International Film Festival and won a special jury prize at the Mountain Film Festival.

Vashon Island Real Estate Finance: Ask Kyle – Buying Up!
Moving from a starter home to a larger home and retaining the previous residence has been a great strategy for accumulating real estate and creating wealth. The recent phenomenon of buying and bailing in distressed markets has caused Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to create new guidelines addressing the issue. Unfortunately this also makes it more difficult for homeowners to acquire additional properties. Most lenders are currently looking for 30% equity in the retained property or 6 months of payments (for both houses) in reserves.
Our current market provides a great opportunity to implement this move up strategy. Golf Savings Bank is a portfolio lender that isn’t subject to the same restricted guidelines such as a max of 4 financed properties and the difficulties of retaining a current home.
Give me a call to see how you can take advantage of these low interest rates and great buys.

Letter from Vashon Island: Glacier Mining and Civil Disobedience (cont’d.)
GoVashon has received a number of interesting responses to our essay on Civil Disobedience and the blockade of the Glacier Mining site several weeks ago on Vashon Island. Today we received the following post from Swaneagle a.k.a. FrontlineMom and reprint it with permission. We hope that other interested members of the community will take the opportunity to write in and express their views on this important issue. This dialogue underlines the unique value of the Blogosphere as an unfiltered forum for free speech in the community!
“Along with an inspiring group of mostly young people, I was part of the road blockade (. . . at the entrance to the Glacier Mining site . . . ). I feel it was a sacrifice to lock down from 5:45 am to 10:30 am even tho we were not arrested. Personally, I prayed for the relief of arrest due to the pain of being locked down so long in steel tubes. Once work started, we decided our point had been made. It is important to bring attention to what we face out here on Vashon.
THIS IS A WORLD CLASS ISSUE OF DESTRUCTION FOR PROFIT THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED AS SUCH. THE PROPOSED MINE MAY BECOME THE LARGEST SAND AND GRAVEL EXTRACTION OPERATION ON EARTH.
For many years I have been working on the human rights of traditional Dine (Navajo) and Hopi impacted by the largest coal strip mine in the US. Over 16,000 people have been forcibly relocated with over half of relocatees already dying. The land is dead, barren and useless. The Dine people have not benefited from this fiasco, only corrupt officials and Peabody have profited.
Many other similar issues have been part of my work. I am willing to do all I can to stop this insane destruction. It is undisputed that our future is grim and our children will be left with a hideous situation. How can we ignore this and keep ourselves safe when they will be left with a nightmare beyond our comprehension?
Voting works for those content to live in a rapidly eroding illusion. Oh, many voted for Obama, but he supports the death penalty and as well as “clean” coal and nuclear power. If one is marginalized and voiceless in this country, no visible representation is permitted.
The Native American voices who have vested interest in the health of the Chinook salmon have not been included. Too many are ignorant of the first peoples who still have heart and spirit invested into these lands taken. Such missing perspectives must be included if we hope for any kind of real solution.
Finally, I wish to say that i am willing to do all in my power to stop Glacier’s insane destruction. Devoted to deep nonviolence, I have exercised that several times already including on the water with courageous youth and other true-hearted activists. Some of us face felony charges if we kayak into the work perimeter again. How easy it is to become a felon in these times of well protected corporations.
We must hear our hearts and act accordingly. All over the earth people are losing their lives, land, community in the name of resource extraction greed. This cannot go on. We have much more freedom to resist on Vashon than the people of the Congo, in Chiapas, Mexico and certainly those remaining resisters at Big Mountain/Black Mesa in Arizona.
Nothing less that soul force courage will do justice to the highly endangered future our children are being handed. We must do our very best to do so much better than that. It is our sacred duty.
