Vashon Island Events: Vashon Dance Academy Presents Snow White ~ Vashon Island Real Estate
On Friday May 29, the Vashon Dance Academy begins a run of performances of Snow White at the Vashon High School Theater. Early ticket purchases are recommended and are on sale at Books by the Way at $12 for adults and $10 for kids up to theage of 18. Show times are 7:30 PM Friday May 29 and Saturday May 30. A final performance is at 1:30 PM on Sunday May 31.
Vashon Island Music: Contra Dance ~ Vashon Island Real Estate
On Saturday, April 25th, from 7 – 9 PM, a contra dance will be held at the Ober Park building. Beginners and families are welcome and there is no need to bring a partner. All dances will be taught and called by Larry Muir and Shane Jewell. Music will be provided by Melodious Thump. Call Shane Jewell at 463-0778 for more information. This is a free event, however donations for the musicians will be appreciated.

So what the heck is The Church of Great Rain? Well, it’s not exactly a bunch of Lutherans from Minnesota. But it is a group of Vashon Island performers who aspire to be the pacific northwest’s answer to A Prairie Home Companion.

Vashon Island Events: Lelavision Presents “Musico Ballistica”~ Vashon Island Real Estate
Lelavision Physical Music presents “Musico Basllistica,” an innovative performance piece combining high-minded science and low-flying projectiles. The performance will be presented at Lelavision’s Barn Studio in Burton. Performances are at 7 PM on Saturday, March 28 and 3 PM on Sunday, March 29. Admission is $15 general and $10 for students. Reservations are required and may be had by calling463-9548 or contacting lela@lelavision.com.
The performance will combine the physical choreography of Leah Mann, the DaVinci-esque musical sculptures of Ela Lamblin, and the observations of scientist Steven Vogel. Vogel recently authored a paper for Lelavision on the physics of ballistics. The paper has been translated into a performance of aerial and modern dance, music, theater and large, interactive kinetic sculpture.

Vashon Island Events: Miscellaneous — Forest Tour, Garden and Chicken Farming Tips, Drum and Dance Class
A tour of several Vashon Island properties that have undergone ecological thinning operations last year will be led by Derek Churchill, Vashon Forest Stewards forester along with Bill Loeber, King County forester and Jean Shaffer with the Forest Guild on Saturday, January 31 at 9:15 AM. The group will meet at the coffee stand in Burton. Participants should bring a bag lunch. The size of the tour is limited: Call David Warren at 463-9405 to reserve a place and for further details.
Vashon Island Growers Association is offering two classes on “Raising Our Own Food.” “Starting a Vegetable Garden” is offered from 10 to Noon on Saturday, January 31 and Saturday February 7. The course will cover choosing a location, soil building, garden planning, how to plant, frugal gardening, watering, protecting a crop, and more.
VIGA is also offering “Raising Chickens for Eggs or Meat” held from 3-5 PM on Sunday, February 8. The course will cover ordering chicks, housing, feeding, managing a laying flock and raising chicken for meat. The group will also discuss how to sell eggs at the Farmers Market.

RhythmJoycommences a new session of Afro-Brazilian drum instruction and dancing on Monday, February 2 at 6:30 pm. Drum students are given an opportunity to apply what they have learned to the dance portion of the program. Students may bring a friend for free for the first class. Dance classes start at 7:30. The cost is $64 for the four week session or $18 to drop in. No experience is needed and instruments are provided. The drum class is taught by Geoff Johns and the dance class by Carol Lutra Johns.

Vashon Island Events: Music at Back Bay Inn, Western Fun, Drumming Circle, Ballet Auditions
On Friday, January 23, from 6-9 PM Vashon Island’s Backbay Inn and Quartermaster Pub will host an encore benefit event for Vashon Island’s Wolftown. This weekend The Trio A Propos will play and there will be a showing of works by Wolftown Artists. Trio À Propos is a Seattle based band that plays music primarily from the musically golden mid section of the 20th century. Our repertoire is a mix of Bal Musette, American swing, French chanson and the music of the great Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.Reservations are encouraged for dinner. Vashon Island Western Storytelling and Singing – On Saturday, January 24, at 11 AM, Books by the Way sponsors an event for kids. One little cowpoke will win a gift certificate to VI Horse Supply. Call 463-2696 for more information.
Vashon Island Drumming Circle – A community drumming circle will be held at the Common House at Vashon Co-Housing, 10421 SW Bank Road from 1 – 3. The event will be lead by Geoff Johns of RhythmJoy. All ages and ability levels are welcome. A $5 donation is suggested but no one will be turned away. Bring your drums and percussion instruments or Geoff will have drums available to borrow.
Vashon Junior Civic Ballet will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake ballet in May, and auditions will be held from 1:30 to 3 PM on Saturday, January 24 in the Ober Park performance room. There are parts for dancers 3 and older and no experience in necessary.

Folk Dance
Martin Koenig, sponsored by the Vashon Folkdancers, will offer a series of 8 folk dance classes, held on consecutive Monday evenings between 7 and 9 pm at Havurat Ee Shalom. The classes start January 5 and end February 23. The Balkan line and circle dance classes range from simple to moderately complex. Fees are $80 for individuals and $40 for students for the series. Zen Meditation
The Vashon Buddhist Insight Group meets every Monday from 7 to 8:30 pm at the Zen Center at 20406 Chatauqua Beach Road. All who are interested are welcome.

Vashon Island Art Studio Tour: December 13-14
The eagerly anticipated Vashon Island Art Studio Tour will be held on Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7 and 13 and 14. This year’s Tour features over 30 studios on Vashon and Maury Islands, and five galleries will also be displaying the work of local artists. Guides to the Tour can be found at Vashon Allied Arts and at local businesses. The Tour also features the Vashon Island Potters’ Tour, including five potters’ studios in the program.

Vashon Island Chorale: Carols
Vashon Island Chorale continues their traditional presentation of “A Celebration of Carols.” Performances are slated for 7:30 pm Saturday, December 6, and 3 pm on Sunday, December7, at Bethel Evangelical Church. The 75 member choir will be joined by a 15-piece chamber orchestra. The performance will include Vaughn Williams “Fantasia on Christmas Carols” and “A Christmas Garland” by Conrad Susa.
Bethel Church is located at SW 158th Street and 119th Avenue. Tickets are $12.50 or $10 for students and seniors and available in advance at Books by the Way and the Vashon Bookshop.
Vashon Island Dance Academy: Addition to Teaching Staff
The Vashon Dance Academy welcomes internationally-known teacher Francois Serre y Berga to its teaching staff. His classes, scheduled for Saturdays, will include an advanced ballet class and an adult beginning jazz class. Classes will be held Saturdays afternoons from November 8 through December 6. Vashon’s Red Bicycle is gearing up for Halloween with performances by Steffan and Arlette Moody’s DARK CARNY – (Cabaret/Theatre) on Thursday, October 30. $10 cover. Starts at 8:30 pm.
Halloween Night: The Subconscious Population Masked Ball
The Red Bicycle Bistro is celebrating Halloween with the Subconscious Population Masked Ball, starting at 9:30 pm on Friday, October 31. The lineup also includes Island favorites Troll’s Cottage. The Ball marks the return of an Island tradition with SubPop.Spooky drink specials and a costume contest will enliven the ghoulish evening’s activities.
Tickets are $10 for ages 21 and over.
Dance Program for Kids
Stacey Hinden will teach two new dance classes for kids this fall. Weekly modern dance classes for kids age 6-9 blend improvisation skills, sensory awareness and anatomy for the dancer. There will be studio showings throughout the year. Classes meet from 3 – 4 pm Thursdays.
A modern dance troupe for kids 10 and older will also form. The class will feature four performances and is a fun movement class and will meet from 4 – 5 pm on Thursdays. Both classes begin October 16 and run through June 11 at the Havurat Ee Shalom at 15401 Westside Highway. Cost is $300. Contact Hinden at 227-5534.
Vashon Event: Dusty 45′s Rock the Bicycle
The Dusty 45′s roots-rockabilly band plays the Red Bicycle on Saturday, October 19 at 9:30 pm. There is a $5 cover charge for the show for ages 21 and older. For more information about the band performances, see The Dusty 45′s.

Vashon Allied Arts Presents The Black Gloves
Vashon Allied Arts New Works Series presents the World Premiere of the original contemporary ballet, “The Black Gloves,” choreographed by Christine Juarez and composed by David O’Suna. Two performances are slated for 1 and 4 pm Sunday October 19 at the Vashon High School Theater. The ballet features an ensemble of graduating seniors from the Blue Heron Dance Company and is billed as a story of hope, romance and intrigue set in Spain in 1842. Tickets are $12 and $14 and are available at the Blue Heron and Heron’s Nest. Call 463-5131 to reserve.
