Cafe Luna Hosts
Original Acoustic Compositions performed on Rare, Antique Harpguitars and Guitars
Tim Bertsch has been a disciple of the guitar and it’s resonance since the age of 10. Now at the age of 35, he has long since lived, composed and performed in three very different musical worlds being equally at home on the electric guitar as well as acoustic guitar/harpguitar. Heavily rooted in jazz, bebop, fusion, flamenco, rock, classical, blues, new age, celtic, and gypsy music his unique musical talents are equally as diverse. He has been a longstanding member of the rock dynamo Jaded Mary, as well as a valued member of the seasoned jazz group H.D. Fusion, sharing the headliner billing with many national acts. His versatility and competency on guitar, harpguitar, bass, mandolin and sitar have made him an in demand studio musician as well as a successful full time private music instructor since 1990.
”A seeker of lost knowledge and technologies, I am an eternal student of life and it’s expression. My voice is of wood and steel. I am a composer, performer, an expressionist.” Tim’s latest solo release “SOULRESONANCE” is a collection of well traveled, thoughtfully composed and arranged original works written and recorded on harpguitar, parlor guitar, and various other rare, unique, acoustic guitars most of which were aquired and personally restored by Tim himself. “I’ve been blessed to have studied with: Larry Coryell, Emily Remeler, Beppe Gambetta, Joshua Breakstone, Don Lamphere and John Stowell as well as many other masters of the resonance”. As a musical composer, performer, and recording artist, Bertsch is always looking for untapped resources of musical expression and inspiration. His lifelong goal: “To live a life of expression, to leave a lengthy, meaningful catolog of my soul’s finest resonances”. Tim’s parting words: “Long after I am gone, my soul’s song will carry on.” T.E.B.

Lunavision Presents
Director: David Redmon. Running Times: 72 and 48 mins (plus extras including a diary from a worker in the factory)
Winner of twenty-one national and international awards, Mardi Gras: Made in China follows the path of Mardi Gras beads from the streets of New Orleans during Carnival – where revelers party and exchange beads for nudity – to the disciplined factories in Fuzhou, China – where teenage girls live and sew beads together all day and night. Blending curiosity with comedy, Mardi Gras: Made in China is the only film to explore how the toxic products directly affect the people who both make and consume them.

Vashon Island Events: Red Bicycle Bistro – Sideways Reign, Trolls Cottage, Church of the Great Rain
01/23/2009 from 09:30 PM. No cover.
Sideways Reign, based in Union, Washington, is a band representative of the artistic sensibilities of the masses. They’re your local barkeep, the hard-hat wearing construction worker, or the ice cream maker on the corner; on and off stage they remain the approachable, everyday guys you grab a beer with after work. In the same sense, A Stand For All Stages, the band’s debut LP, offers something for the broadest of audiences with a genre defying blend of rock, blues, folk, and reggae.
01/24/2009 at 09:30 PM. $8 cover.
Trolls Cottage packed the house with Subconscious Population last Halloween like no other bands have ever been able to, thanks to the warm welcome by friends and family that came out to support the hometown boys. It may be cold outside, but it’s smokin’ hot in the room with TC throwing down some beats. Trolls Cottage is returning to The Red Bicycle after a few months away for another smokin’ hot show!
The Trolls Cottage sound has been defined in many ways. Some say it is semi-acoustic rock with conscious lyrics and danceable beats. Others see have seen it different light, such as in 2002, when their live album was voted to the semi-finals of the Grammy Awards, in the Best Reggae Album category. More often than not, Trolls Cottage has been described as unique, having developed a sound that makes the group stand out from the oceans of other bands. They are enjoyed by a wide range of people, especially when performing at outdoor festivals where the crowds are so diverse. They have released four full length CD’s with another soon to be. The energy this band brings to a performance is exhilarating and most certainly compels the audience to get up and dance.
01/25/2009 from 07:00 PM. No Cover.
So what the heck is The Church of Great Rain? Well, it’s not exactly a bunch of Lutherans from Minnesota. But it is a group of Vashon Island performers who aspire to be the pacific northwest’s answer to A Prairie Home Companion.

Vashon’s Cafe Luna: Alicia Healey & Friends
Alicia Healey with Lisa Mills & Laurie Miller
Country/Roots/Pop/Folk
November 15, Saturday, 7:30
No Cover
Seattle songwriter Alicia Healey brings with Lisa Mills and Laurie Miller (both of Swamp Mama Johnson) will be performing vocals, harmonica and electric guitar at Cafe Luna.
Alicia Healey is real live Iowa farm girl. Back on the homestead, her powerful, classically-trained voice won her acclaim in musical theatre, but her “inner songwriter” was hankering to get out. She polished up her folk guitar, came west, and started writing songs that added a contemporary folk flavor to her driving pop and country. Her songwriting is featured on the CD “Quiet Here” and her new recording “Live at the Mansion.”
She spent several years with the acoustic country/folk group Rodeo Lagoon a group well-known in the Pacific Northwest for its amazing harmonies and fresh arrangements of folk and bluegrass songs. Rodeo Lagoon recorded an 7-song CD in 2001 (available for download and order), which highlights both the lead-vocal prowess and the magical blend of the three voices.

The benefits of extra mortgage payments… owning your home sooner!
Even with the national housing market in a slump, the Seattle real estate market continues to appreciate. So, for those of you who already own a home, you know that your property is a solid investment. But what should you do if you’ve got some extra cash to invest?
Consider making additional principal payments which can significantly shorten the term of your loan and put serious money in your pocket. Here’s how it works…
When you buy your home and take out a loan, the lender earns a rate of return on the amount you borrowed, not just at the annual percentage rate of your mortgage but at a compounded rate because you’re borrowing the money for the long term.
But… if you pay down your loan, the reverse is also true in that you’ll not just earn the annual percentage rate on the amount you pay off, but a compounded rate of return because you’re effectively shortening the length of the loan. I did this on my own home several years ago and calculated that on a loan of about 8% interest, I was actually earning a compounded rate of about 13% on the lump sum I paid down against the principal. And it was a guaranteed rate of return, a LOT better than what I could have done in the stock market without risk!
The exact amount can be difficult to calculate if you don’t have an amortizing calculator. To make things easier, here’s an easy-to-use Mortgage Calculator that lets you figure in recurring or one-time principal payments and how that changes your pay-off dates.
